Service Bulletin #75 - Cellular Modem Best Practices

This service bulletin applies to agencies utilizing Avail's cellular modems as part of an in-vehicle system.

Modem compatibility

Avail currently supports 4G and 5G modems, but the antennae are not interchangeable.

What do I need to do?

If you receive 5G cellular modems, do not use the modem or the 5G antenna with a 4G cellular setup. Doing so could cause connection issues or could damage the internal cellular module of the 5G modem.

How do I differentiate between 4G and 5G equipment?

While a 4G cell module modem features two cell antenna connections, a 5G cell module modem is equipped with four. Similarly, in the case of a dual-cell module modem, the antenna connections increase from four in the 4G version to eight in the 5G version.
