The MDC ID (Mobile Data Computer Identifier) is a unique identifier that tells the vehicle’s onboard computer which bus it is operating on. In most cases, the MDC ID matches the bus number. However, some agencies may use an abbreviated version if their bus numbers are too long.
If the MDC ID is not set, the MDT (Mobile Data Terminal) will display a warning message:
- MDC ID INVALID: MDC ID has not been set. Please notify dispatch immediately.
This message can be alarming but is easy to resolve.
Why You Might Need to Update the MDC ID
You may need to update the MDC ID in the following scenarios:
- Hard drive swaps: When a vehicle’s hard drive is replaced (e.g., due to memory limits or software updates).
- IVU (In-Vehicle Logic Unit) replacements: When the IVU is replaced or moved between vehicles.
What Happens If It’s Not Set
If the MDC ID is missing or incorrect:
- The MDT will display a persistent error message.
- Drivers may report the system as “broken.”
- Dispatch may be contacted unnecessarily.
- The vehicle may not report correctly in myAvail ETMS reporting.
How to Set or Update the MDC ID
- On the MDT, navigate to the Maintenance Admin screen:
- Select Menu >
- Then Maintenance >
- And finally Admin >
- Select Menu >
