Process
To create a new detour, click the plus icon in the Active Detours tab. This icon opens the Detours section of the ETMS in a separate browser window, depending on the default setting for your computer. Avail recommends using Chrome or Edge. Below is the initial page load:
In this window, specify the following information about the detour:
- Detour Name: Name of the detour used in the main grid and any notification templates (required).
- Cause: The cause of the detour. The GTFS Real-time feed displays this cause. The GTFS Real-time specification defines the choices in the list (required).
- Effect: The effect of the detour. The GTFS Real-time feed displays this effect. The GTFS Real-time specification defines the choices in the list (required).
- Active: Enable or disable the Inactive detours appear in the “Expired Detours” tab on the main detour screen.
- Date and Time Range: The Date and Time ranges are separate values, which allows you to customize what is needed. The default setting is set to "all day".
- Days of Week: By default, all days are all set to ON, but you can turn days OFF when a detour is only valid during certain days of the week, such as Monday through Friday.
IMPORTANT TIPS: System Design
- The Detour tool recognizes one-way roads. When redrawing the temporary trace for vehicle use during active detours, the tool disallows use of wrong direction
- The tool may redraw a path using the shortest distance. Simply manually adjust the path to pull it out of the impact zone
- The tool doesn't allow detours to be entered in the past
- The messages, which are auto-generated based on the path drawn, require a review/save for each individual message, and a final save for the group is required to enable the messages to display on your myStop applications or on social media platforms, if used
- The tool creates messages for detours that include timepoint stops
- Detours can be copied for reuse, but to use this feature correctly, the polygon cannot be modified in any way.
- Examples:
- We want to use the same detour again for an event but need to change the impact zone itself, to adjust the shape of the polygon. Can we do that? In cases where a change is required for the impact zone itself, please create a new detour.
- We want to reuse a detour for the same area and only adjust the date, time range and messages. Yes, you can do this.
- Detours are maintained for reuse on the Expired Detours tab for 90 days What if we need to use a detour that expired? You can review the Detours report in Business Intelligence (Operations reports) for information you used for detours created in the past

RELATED WORKFLOW: For detours that reduce or add vehicle miles and hours, enter deviations in DataPoint > System Adjustments calendar to include the metrics for your NTD reporting needs.

Video Demo
In this video, we'll demonstrate how to create a detour with moved stops, beginning in the myAvail Dispatch application.
